I apologize if this has been answered before, but I can't find it in the archive.
What fingering do you use to chop the F chord?
Thanks in advance.

Either this one:
E-1
A-3 \__Cover both strings with the middle finger
D-3 /
G-5

2 3 3 X also works, a little darker

10 7 8 X three fingered D moved up three frets.

Wow! what a great way to remember your PIN number - think of a chord shape - BTW, I'll NOT be using F if you find my card http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Most of the chop's importance is on the bottom two strings- 53.

or 533 to really fatten it up.

You CAN chop 233 and get the complete F triad. However, the "usual" Certified By The International Board of Bluegrass Inspector's Approved Voicings have the 5th and root on the bottom two strings- so my first choice is consistent with those demands #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Wow! I didn't know there were certified chords. I better get out my manual.

Wow! I didn't know there were certified chords.

Oh yes! And certified chords don't like sharing a tune with uncertified ones and tend to get the Chord Union to call a strike if you try it on http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Also don't confuse chop chords with chopped cords (the latter being shorts made from corduroy trousers) otherwise you might be certified http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Definitely uncertified: 5-3-O-1 and palm mute. The open "A" doesn't ring out the way I do it.

Another vote for 233X. Certified chords and manuals. You guys are too much- one of the reasons I love this site.

5-7-8-5 or 10-7-8-x across GDAE and using four fingers, not barred. You can slide up two to get the G chord. Played with the C chop chord down on the seventh fret for the key of C. Angel band sounds good down there.

Like jbmando, I use the 5 3 0 1 for first position. But use the 5 7 8 5 for the second position. Altho I usually call those the 1 0 5 3 and 5 8 7 5. As the #1 sting is at the bottom and I like to refer to that one first. Also for a varied sound I use the 5 3 3 1 for the first position and 10 7 8 5 for the second position.

I'm not even sure if my PIN is a chord. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
