View Full Version : Have you ever......

Feb-21-2006, 2:29pm
Folks,

I am curious who has gotten a mandolin and not realized in a strange kind of way what they really had.

....a few days later it hits you

......... a few days later it begins to sink in, so you think

............... when you pick it up and look at it, start to pick it, and as you play it you can hear the opening up of the mandolin.

..................... you simply get chills, then nervous, then awe

Have you ever help a mandolin and used words like:
... good gawd!
... oh my god!
... what in the world do I do with this now

.....these are just a few words that come to mind.

You know this is the one! Given a choice everything else would go.

Stranded on a desert island this is the one mandolin you would take.

I can't be the only one.

Well now you have to tell us what you got! #I've had that experience a few times. #Once with a Collings MF5 that was just amazing. #It would have gone home with me if I'd had the money at the time. #Happened again with a Gibson Fern I just sold. #It was a darn nice one, the neck was just too narrow for me. #It's new owner is pretty happy with it. Forgot to add a cedar topped Weber Fern. Absolutely knocked my socks off.

Can't say I've had that about a mandolin yet. I've played Collingses, Gilchrists, tickled a couple of Loars, played a Phoenix or two, played a Prucha or two, etc.

I HAVE however dicovered the cure to my case of GAS. I have a guitar that I would not give up. If I were told, "One instrument only" on a desert Island, I'd cheat and bring my SCGC and my mando.

I played on a Heiden A5 briefly last week and, yes, those are phrases that keep coming back to me. Another phrase is, "You cannot afford this!" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Michael Lewis had a mandolin at IBMA a couple of years ago that did that to me. Black face, to the specs of Grisman's loar. Of course it's several thousand more than I could possibly come up with, but that didn't change the feeling.

Thankfully, I have two mandolins that do that for me, my Duff A5 2pt varnish and my Brock octave. My Gibson A9 is o.k. just nothing special.

The Ellis at Smokey didn't do anything for me. Of course, neither did the Duff there. Goes to show, sometimes you just find a gem, and you never know who might make it.

It was nice to meet you though, x!

When I played the first of Herschel Sizemore's Loars I just said "Wow!" I then looked at the walls in the living room as I played. I think I expected to see something come bouncing off the walls that equaled the sounds that I heard. I didn't see anything........well, except Herschel's dog lookin' at me like I was not supposed to be playing that thing!
"Well, I now know what all the talk about Lloyd Loar means."

I did. I was thinking of Spaceballs, but actually it only works in Portuguese translation. So, nevermind. May the Schwartz be with you.
