Talk about animated onstage!! Not bad playing, either.

Big Mon always liked Donna's variation on his classic "Bluegrass Stomp". She pretty much put the "stomp" in the Stomp! Love the way she strapped her big 50's F5 on!

I always thought bongo drums would go well with mandolin, but I'll admit, this wasn't what I had in mind...
Cool video, but a tad disturbing.

Ted, You have a salmon colored mandolin. Are you the pot or the kettle? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif My kids love that movie and the Juggler (Chris Bliss) Dale Ludewig posted today. Made bedtime easy.

Notice the tambourine accompaniment... very cutting-edge stuff. Remember that the tambourine is a very highly advanced form of the banjo.

That really, really, REALLY scared me I think! I really don't know what it did to me yet because I am still kind of speechless after watching that. WOW.

If you take a look at www.mandozine.com and go to the youTube videos under the quicklinks you can see a couple more vids of the Stoneman Family in addition to Django Reinhardt and Ricky Skaggs. Good Stuff

Was she that animated onstage back in the day, or was this just hamming it up for the filming??

I love the look on the "producer's" face in the control room...
I think he might have been "a little disturbed" too.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

That was fairly typical of how they performed. #It had the Jane Fonda go-go boots that were made for walking twist to it.

"That was fairly typical of how they performed."

Plugged in too??
And that loud?
With, (cough glug) tambourine?? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Man, this would predate the whole Newgrass Revival electric vs. acoustic controversy by quite a few years, no?

Wow, is that priceless - what movie is it from? #Part of what makes it so funky is the guitar over on the side, almost out of the picture, and the tamborine up front in your face. #Although Donna tears it up pretty much in your face, too. Reckon she was one of Barbara Mandrell's early influences?

Someone in another thread about this same clip from the front page gave me the info...
this is from the movie "Road to Nashville" with Marty Robbins. Amazon has it on DVD for $7.98. I added it to my wishlist. Thanks to the guy who helped me with this earlier.

It appears in the recent photo to be the same 50's F5 with the pickup removed, new dot fingerboard and refinish job probably compliments of Gibson,Inc. She still lives near Nashville, TN. I learned a lot from watching her on The Stoneman Family weekly TV Show and in live appearances in the 60's/70's. She's got style with plenty of punch.

I understand she now preaches using her puppets and mandolin in her Ministry. They showed a coupla clips like this at the Mandolin Symposium, the past two years. I did a search to find out what she was up to now. Boy, her fiddlin' brother Scotty was something else!

The first time I saw the Stoneman Family play--back in '72 or so--Donna played a rip-roaring version of "Rawhide" wearing petite little white lace gloves . . . and not the kind with the fingertips cut off, either. Full coverage. Pretty scary.

That was me that let the cat out of the bag on where the clip came from. I've had it in VHS. It was made in 1965 so yes it was long before Sam Bush really knew much about "grass" let alone "newgrass". Sam was but a wee lad hanging out in Raleigh, NC in those days. I'm sure he ran into The Stonemans like we did back then. Donna had you spell bound by not only her unique approach to the F5 but also her overall stage presence. She capivated her audience with zip and zeel. And her dancing on those go-go boots weren't bad at all! Her brother Scotty on the fiddle also inspired many a showman on how to get'er done on stage.
Monroe fiddler Richard Greene said Scotty was a big influence while developing his style. Scotty can best be heard on some of the old Kentucky Colonels releases with Clarence and Roland White. Donna can also be heard doing some serious Monroe style picking on the Capital LP called "Rose Maddox Plays and Sings Bluegrass" which also has Monroe on a few cuts.
