Have you checked your tailpiece cover to make sure its not touching the strings?

I know you have to press hard on the strings...I am still having a hard time getting a clean solid note. It is very frustrating at times. My fingertips are getting little calussed but I still need to slow down to get a clean note. Can anyone offer assistance to improve on note quality?

Buzzing can be a matter of mandolin set up or it can be a problem with the timing between the left hand and the right hand. If the strings are too close to the fret board, no matter how well you play, you will probably have some buzz, a less than clean sound due to the strings being too close to the frets. If your timing between left and right hand is off just a tiny bit, you can get buzzing by releasing or fretting the strings at the wrong time. When I first started playing, I went to Cotten Music in Nashville and was shopping around...I was chopping on a nice mandolin and it buzzed, so I handed it to the fellow behind the counter. He chopped it a couple of times with the cleanest sound, handed it back to me, and said, "It sound fine to me." At this point I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me. If you hold down a chord as hard as you can and strum and still get a buzz, chances are it is something with the mandolin. If not, then it is probably technique.

Also if your fingers are getting just a little callused, then you have a lot of work ahead of you probably.
