Well this isn't one of my better pics, too much sunlight!
Its a 1924 A1 sn# 75447 neck block# 11918. Shes a well preserved old gal, with only a few finish cracks, and her top has not sagged any http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif It has a diffrent tone from other A Gibsons I have, much more focused, less sustain, not to much bass but lots of midrange and treble, original pick guard(non clamp type) ,bridge and period replacement tuners, (dang!)

Thanks Michael! Was the back replaced or bound after the fact? Normally an A1 would't have back binding.. Never can tell with these old birds though

Dan

I have carefully studied this mandolin and the back binding is original to the instrument. I have seen others with the rear binding, a matter a fact I thought the A1's had rear binding??

Typically not- it'd be an A2, A2z, or A4 to get back binding. Usually the difference between an "A" and an "A1" is "The Gibson" on the peghead. The snakeheads are known to break the rules, but usually it'd be with feaux tortoise back binding, not white. The top binding looks unusually white as well- could have been replaced at the same time, but you've obviously got it in front of you so I'll defer! It could actually be a mislabled A2!

Dan,

Check out 75213 on the Archive, looks just like mine without "The Gibson" on head stock. I will try to post better pics of mine, and details of bindings.

I have to jump in here and add that I've seen 2 or 3 #other A1's from '24 with the back-binding - including my own, #77166 (it's in the archives).

Certainly were "Elastic specifications" back then! I agree with you now from the other examples that this is likely original!

By the way, I noticed that 77166 (love that X-ray!) wasn't allowing the images to be zoomed-up to full size, so I've fixed that in the archives now!

My '25 straight A (81547 on Mandolin Archive) has back binding, FB binding, multi-ply rosette and pearl script. It's an A-2/A-2z..just doesn't say so
