It barks like a coon dog, growls like a Doberman, howls like a Timber Wolf, or it can be as sweet as Lassie. The mandolin ain't too shabby either. I haven't had the mandolin near as long as the dog. I'm 47. My mama bought the dog for me when I was 5? He is the only one that I will trust with my mandolin. Real interesting post. #I had never heard of Horner until playing a show recently with Monroe Fields. #It had a wonderful tone and chop. #As a matter of fact I have been on the lookout for a Horner myself. Congrats on the find. #I have no idea how many mandolins he has made, more violins I think. #Enjoy.

Thank you Mr. Fisher for the info. I checked the Gruhn site and looked at them. Maybe I can get to Nashville and have a look. Looks like they have a lot of other goodies too.

I just happen to have (2) HORNER mandolins: an "A"(1990) and a "just bought" F5('96) from Pic' n' Grin Music(Knoxville, Tenn.). The F5 was once owned/played by Adam Steffy. The "A" was originally sold to Aubrey Haney(sp.). The "A" "blew away" a table-full of "high-end"(!!$$$) mandos that Chas. Johnson had for sale at the Philadelphia Guitar Show the year I bought it - 2001(I think - I have the receipt at home). I hope Lynn D. dosen't object.., but he told me - in e-mail correspondence, that "Gene" Horner "...turned him on..." to start building mandolins some time/long time('70's I think) ago! - "Mr. D." (Lynn) was instrumental in "finding" the F5 for me - Thank you Lynn(!) - AND I hope you don't mind that I have "quoted"(or, paraphrased) you. The Horner pictured is one of the first he made after re-tooling to my Loars specs. He borrowed my Loar for a few weeks and made all new forms. #He started using that logo then too, modified his neck joint to traditional specs, reworked the peghead shape and scroll contours (among changes in profile and graduation). #Looks like one of the ten bridges I gave him then too

Darryl - If it helps, the serial number on my Horner is 67190-S. The bridge is a Steve Smith that I installed.

67190 means he was 67 years old and #190 instrument. Problem is, I don't remember how old he is now
