Does this ever end?
I realize that 40 bucks or so is not a lot of money, but thet should work a little better than this.
Tune up.jump past, tune down, fall below.
DO you need to wedge something between the gears with this brand of tuner.
I have had then for about 5 weeks and I'm sick of em.

Are these the only set like these?

I've had that happen before - but it was a 'nut' problem. #I put a little graphite from a pencil in the slot and the problem went away... Just an idea... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I agree. Sounds like a tight nut slot. I'd file the slot to the correct size rather than the pencil trick, though.

Yup - providing you've got nut files of the right size - which I don't! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

I do have several nut files and I have learned to rock them back and forth to get the clearence that I am after.
It worked.......WOW, I had no idea how much string pinch was going on.
Vol;ume just shoots out of the G strings now. They were muted and I didnt even know it.
Thanks guys. Very much! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Banjo1 - Glad that worked! #I don't have any nut files; I broke an E-string recently while re-stringing my mandolin - and I think that was due to 'pinch' in the slot as that's where the remaining string length indicated the break was.

I'd had a new nut put on by a local luthier and he 'set it up' with lighter-guage GHS strings than the normal D'Addario J75's I usually use. #It might be the slightly larger diameter string pinched a bit...And I was tightening that string a bit 'fast' - which may have helped cause it to break.

I'm not sure (others might be able to enlighten me), but I suspect if one was to use consistent diameter strings, EVENTUALLY the notches in a bone nut would 'wear' out a bit every time you run a string in and out of them during each re-stringing process. #

I know the graphite trick worked fine and I didn't break the replacement string, nor do I have any 'slip, tight, slip, tight' issues like you started with.

Cheers!

The tuning of the mandolin is much better now.I do need to have someone look at it that has good eyes up close.I have a little string buzz and I think that I may not have my slots level.
But it's all better even with the tiny buzz.

Schallers do nicely with a bit of lube and a minute of spinning with the string winder.

Hi Steve
I only added the lube after seeing your Mandovoodoo webpage.I assumed that they came with a little oil on them. You still will get my mando some day to voodoo on.
They work so much better, it's like having a new set on.Oh wait , they are new.
I am soo glad that i am not too old to learn.
Thanks All
