Just for fun, I have added an old-time music discussion forum to my website at sugarinthegourd.com. You can get there by going to the main site and clicking on "Forum" (well, duh) or going to: http://forum.sugarinthegourd.com

There's nothing there yet, but maybe it'll be something folks find useful...

Season's greetings, etc.

I just became a member. It's good to see an active mandolin section there. It's also good to see some of the members from here already there. Thanks for starting it!

wow- just got turned on to curtis bukhannon through the sugarinthegourd forum- pretty amazing - talk about someone who could do it on their own- can barely hear guitar on most of the clips- love it! must learn some more old time stuff.
query- i see a lot of tunes that are also listed on bg sites (e.g. old joe clark) do i play em the same way? what is the difference.

Nice forum!

ira, my instructor and i just discussed that very question for that very song.

My best advice is to find a BG version of the tune and an OT version and compare an contrast as its difficult to put into words, for me at least. .. but something I can immediately recognize.

Oh and I like this analogy. . paraphrased and source unknown.

If bluegrass is a finely groomed thoroughbred, old time is a mule.
