Trying to figure out if there are any relatively affordable ($1000 or less) A-styles out there that also have a lap point. The only mandolin I'm familiar with that has both these features is the Rigel that seemed like a limited run (and is way out of my price range). New or vintage. Not necessarily concerned about tone (BG vs. classical), just construction (no bowlbacks).

What is a "lap point"?

Steve, a lap point is a point, like those on an F-style body, that prevent the mandolin from moving while resting on your lap when you play seated. The Rigel Timothy is referring to is this one, with the 1 lap point http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Rigel Qypsy Q95. #That one looks like the smoked Salmon I'm about to eat. mmm. #Ted also had a pumpkn pie Q95. #A green Bean top and a Roast Beast burst and you got Christmas Diner.

Edit back to topic question. I don't know of any other A with a single point. I may have seen something in the Post a pictures of a mandolin odditity here (3/4 way down is a triangle shaped one) (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=13416;st=125)

Well for a $1000 or less....humm I don't think you are going to find something like the Rigel Q95 in that price range, much less in a higher price range at that. The only thing I can think of is a small time custom builder who is building A-Style mandolins for under $1000 that would be willing to give that style a try.

Mentioned here before, but I think it was more towards the scroll idea, but maybe you could get someone to make a point that attached to an A style body. Kind of like the way an arm rest attaches with a violin chin rest bracket. That might be a fun and cool idea for someone to play around with.

C.E.Ward builds an A with a lap point. His mandolins command about 3 times your limit though.I have only seen one come up for sale via the classifieds in 4-5 years.X braced and oh so nice. The last few he made had cyprus/juniper tops. Lp

You can use one of the legs on a toneguard as a lap brace.

Some of the Lyon and Healy A models had a telescoping extension leg on them that served the same stabilizing purpose as a built-in lower bout point.

I don't know if that might be an option since you are not likely to find one of those in that price range. There could be other mandolins that might have that feature, but that is the only one I'm familiar with.
