Ok, I realize I should have asked this before I ordered it. #Anyway, does anyone know if the beginning mandolin book and cd by Greg Horne is any good? #Thanks,

Hi Mandy,

Yes, it's a good book. I like it. It's clear, with a manageable learning curve.
You'll enjoy it I'm sure. It covers lots of different styles.

I may be slightly biased having penned the third book in that series but I too think Greg did a great job in authoring both of his books (he wrote the intermediate vol in the series too) He covers all the basics and as Grandmainger says does it all in a way that makes the learning curve fun and manageable

The book is great. It manages to go in depth on a variety of topics, is hard enough to be motivating without being discouraging, and it opens up my fingers, mind, and ears. I don't think you can really go wrong, i.e. by thinking, "I should have gotten that other book instead".

This is my main book and I have bought many of them. My instructor told me that he thought it was very clearly written for a beginner.

Well, I got the book in the mail today and my fingers really hurt now if that says anything. #Playing the banjo for a year now I thought that my fingers would have good enough callouses, but nope!! #Anyway, #I really like the book. #I like the way it gives you the option of reading music or playing tab. #I hate reading music, #I don't have the patience for it. #I can plunk all day reading tab, but there is something I just don't get reading music. #Thanks for the reply's, #I really think this will get me off to the right start.

Got it from Amazon. #I think it was around $16.00, but you can get one used for less. #By the way, I have used the book everyday since and am really enjoying it. #The cd that comes with it makes a huge difference. #I have been playing along with it, then stopping it and doing it on my on and such. #It really helps to be able to look at the tab and then hear it being played the right way. #It also includes standard music notation, I am just stubborn about reading music when tab is so easy. #Hope this helps.
