WOW!!! The guitar is usable as is, but since the mando*s aren't playable you should give them to me! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Nice collection!

I do play the guitar, but I have other every day instruments (manodlin, mandola, mandocello) so I'm just preserving these in their cases. Who knows, maybe they will be worth something someday.

Cheers

Is taking the strings off the best way to preserve them? I don't take the engine out of my car when I'm not going to drive it for a few months.

#I don't take the engine out of my car when I'm not going to drive it for a few months.
Maybe you should. It will give you something to do this weekend!

Is it just the lighting, or are these instruments purple-burst?

Dec-16-2005, 7:52pm
All these are a matching cherry red sunburst. I guess it's the lighting. Or perhaps my limited photography experience. Thanks for looking.

For the guy who doesn't know how to remove the engine from his car, give it a try and let me know how it works out for you.

..to each his own..but I would think..and know,,,that having those fine relics of history just sitting there...not being played...not having the sound fusing thru them is just senseless....I wouldnt buy a car without hearing its motor..neither would you I suspect...There has been many a conversation on here about keeeping a mando playable...Yea..they might be worth something someday...but maybe more if they had more to offer than just looks.

If they were mine they would probably look like that after a while.. you know, need fret jobs and stuff. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Buying an older instrument w/o strings would have me a bit concerned about why they were not strung. I would want them strung and tuned to pitch. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Beautiful instruments though.

Conrad

Do you still have that Blackface-Collection you once showed us ? Are the Blacktops the "I have other every day instruments" you refer to ?

And finally I remember your "stolen ad" a few months ago. Were all these stolen instruments found ?

Just curious .....

bluesmandolinman:

The black top, collection is gone (mostly stolen). I bought these these instruments out of emotion for the loss. As you know I'm a collector.

Anyway, I do have vintage Gibson instruments that I play daily.

This collection of instruments; however, is in extra fine condition and I will do what is necessary to ensure thet stay that way. And maybe someday when I can afford strings I'll play these too.

Conrad. That's a sweet collection. They're youurs to do with what you choose. I'm with the others.. I would love to know they're getting played but if you've had others stolen I'm sure you want to do everything to keep those safe. That 'cello and style O are insane! Thanks for sharing the photos.

Hey, Maybe they'll be safer if they're not so close to each other. I would gladly offer my humble home for keeping the cello safe in. With my playing skills noone would ever suspect I would have it. Just something to think about.

Sorry to hear about the stolen Blacktops.

I wished I bought that H-4 when I had the chance ...

Hopefully they will be found and returned to you !

Good luck !

How does that Style O guitar sound?

Been thinking about one of those!

The Style O has a great old-time/swing tone with pleny of volume. Although the neck is huge, the playing action is fansastic.

For some reason, the holes look more circular than I remember, and the quartet appears to be singing in barber-shop harmony. You can hear them too, can't you? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I have kind of a 'comment-question.' #I've always heard it IS 'better' for instruments to be played. #Now, I'm not the collector like many folks here on the Cafe' - I've got three guitars, two mandolins and a banjo. #I've only got 24 hours in a day - 8 of which are consumed in my 'regular job.' #I sleep 5-6 hours a night, and have other obligations here and there, but do squeeze in a bit of time on all my instruments - though not all every day. #So... How DOES one with - for example - 4-5 mandolins - manage to 'keep them played???' #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

By the way - beautiful collection. #The tailpiece on the Style O guitar is similar to that on my Dad's 1952 Gibson ES125 acoustic-electric in tobacco sunburst. #(Something he's mentioned I might well inherit someday...yet ANOTHER thing to try to play!) #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

I agree that these should be played. Over the holiday I strung them all up and had a great time playing. Expecially the mandola. What a great instrument. These will soon be listed for sale on the cafe. Then someone who has more time may give these instrument the attention they deserve.

We need more than 24 hours in a day. #How about each of us get an extra hour for each instrument we own? #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

wow, it's the first i'd heard that the black top collection was stolen...what a shame! I love that pic you posted way back when and have it framed in my office at work. It was quite a inspriration to me to go after my mando/tenor guitar collecting dreams myself. I hope ya get em back soon and the culprit is punished bigtime!

Conrad, Thats a fine collection of instruments. How ever did you come to own all those? I know how hard it is to fine clean examples. Even if you have money, its not always easy to fine great clean vintage mandos. But then you are selling them, so that blows my theory http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I didn't keep the insurance policy as up-to-date as I could have. The insurance was very fair to me, but I would rather have the instruments. As you can see, I have a much smaller collection. I guess some of the fun is gone. Anyway, no regrets.

We're all in this together.

Cheers
