We went to Gail and Chuck Hesters last Friday and had A great time. Her mandolins are so loud and fun to play and she is only on #4!
The H-5 was a joy to hear and play, and makes me think of building one.
Here's a few pic's.

They definitely look great and she is quite a talented lady! I would love to hear them myself.

Cool. Great pics. And what a lovely collection! What's that one on the lower right with the curly top?

Could you list the names of the mandolins pictured? Is the second from the right on the couch the Cliff Sargent she refinished?

Very talented indeed. That's a good looking group of mandolins!

Lower left f4 is a Gavin Baird I'll bet...and second from right on the floor is that snakehead Gail rebraced and repaired right?

Sharp eyes, gentlemen: #they are left to right starting with the upper row--
Hester F5-#3, Hester F5-#1, Hester H5-#2, Gibson Master Model, '83 Sargent F5...lower row--Gavin Baird F4,Peter James F5-#2, '24 Snakehead, Cole F5

Gail's work is very impressive--craftswomanship,finish,detail,action and sound--the works. #The Snakehead was a major rebuild; it's a beauty with a balanced, booming tone. #She doesn't play, but Chuck's musical skills are equal to the quality of Gail's instruments...very talented household.

Same group...

Gail's first three instruments--1,2,3 from right to left. She started two years ago, I believe...using mostly the Dudenbostel construction series. Amazing...

It was a real pleasure meeting Bill and Peter, two very classy gentlemen. They came bearing gifts and some very nice mandolins of their own. We enjoyed their visit and had a really fun day playing mandolins and sharing building ideas. Life is good.

I'm sure Ken Ratcliff (builder of Silver Angel mandolins) follows these threads; in his website -

- he mentions he thought his wife Laura might be the only woman building mandolins these days, but obviously Gail Hester is doing a fine job at it as well! # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
