I bought my first hand made mandolin a few months ago, and have never been so impressed with an instrument before. The maker is Michael Terris (http://www.terrisguitarmaker.com/info/page2.html), a luthier from NJ who's work you may have never run across since he makes more resonator guitars than mandolins. The design is mostly traditional F-5, but he has some nice original ideas incorporated in the headstock.

So of course I wanted some cool pics to post here, but after paying for a roll of blurry amateur shots from my 35mm I realized that I needed some help, and hired my friend Archie (http://www.patenaudephotography.com). He's an art photographer, not a player, so I was curious to see how he would approach this project.

This shot of the fretboard had a lot of glare, which apparently made everything else darker. I like the effect.

This shot of the tuners reminds me of street lights. It's cool in B&W.

Archie's camera is around 12 megapixels, so if you zoom in on the strings you can see the coils (and the dust). I like this angle.

The old guitar stand in this picture makes the mando look like a rocket waiting to take off. I especially like the shadow on the right.

Someday I'd like to replace the tail piece with one from Bill James, but this pic makes it look pretty cool, kinda like ice melting.

A nice close up of the frets, including some lint from my polishing cloth...

I like the wood texture in this one, featuring the heel...

I'm very happy with the pictures, and even happier with the mandolin.

Have you ever had a pro photograph your mandolin, or had a photo that you took come out really cool?

I'd love to see them! Post 'em if you got 'em!

Michael Terris, a luthier from NJ who's work you may have never run across...
I met him nearly 20 years ago, back when we were both building banjos. Haven't seen him in a while. Glad to know he's still building.
