I heard "Sundown" on the way into work today, and I can't get it out of my HEAD!! I have no exposure to Gordon, so my questions are: Any good Mando tunes? Any good crossover bluegrass tunes? What would be a good record to buy/starting point?

I recall reading that Tony Rice did an album of Gordon's tunes, that is what I'll start off with, yet I do want some true Gordon records.

Ok, thanks and take care,dy.

"What would be a good record to buy/starting point?"

"Tony Rice sings Gordon Lightfoot" (Rounder Records) Of course, a good way to get into Lightfoots music would be the 4 CD set of the man himself. Canīt go wrong with that!

Hey, Tim O'Brien just did Gord's "In The Early Morning Rain" on his latest record, Fiddler's Green. Good cd to get and there's mando on this cut, but played by Chris Thile, not Tim. Tim's on bouzouki on this cut. Thile tears loose with some backing fills on the 2nd verse.

Why not go directly to the source...>>>Gordon Lightfoot (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:zxfibkj96akb~T1) himself?

Nothing wrong with picking up "Tony Rice, or Tim O'Brien (or whoever) does Lightfoot (or Ian & Sylvia, or James Taylor, etc.)" but I figure, if Lightfoot, or James Taylor is good enough for them, I ought to follow their steps and listen to the same recordings which made a strong enough impression that they'd cover the songs.

You could start off with the 2-cd compilation The United Artists Compilation (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fuc8b5m4bsqs) for the early stuff. #Gord's Gold (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:6fkku3i5an8k) has 21 tracks from the early 70's.

(BTW - Ry Cooder plays mandolin on the song "Alberta Bound" on the Don Quixote (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wga9kemt7q7q) album.)

I've got 5 or 6 of his LPs from the 70's which are in line for burning to CDR. (Gotta finish doing the Kinks albums).

There are several "Lightfoot's Greatest Hits"-type albums available, probably a good starting point. "Sundown" is a great album, as is "Sit Down, Young Stranger." "Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot" features lots of mando by the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Jimmy Gaudreau, and Norman Blake. Also of interest may #be "Beautiful: A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot," on the Borealis label. borealis records (http://www.borealisrecords.com/cd_beautiful.html)

Got fifth row tickets to Gordon a couple of years back. What a fine show that was. I'd definitely buy an album covering his material to go along with the originals.
