It seems that the great web site rukind.com has been down as part of the same process that caused archive.org to pull most of its Grateful Dead content.

This really stinks. I really enjoyed having all the chords/tabs available on rukind.com.

I miss the shows on the LMA.....soundboards I can understand, but to remove the audience ones:angry:

What was it about RU KIND that prompted them to be shut down?

As I heard it...the 'interpreted tabs' on rukind.com were deemed 'copyrighted material' by the GD estate.

The tabs seem to be still there. The home page has a notice:
11/26/05: Happy Thanksgiving? About 6 hours into a week long vacation 1600 miles away, my router decided to #### out. I got back today and spent the last 5 hours setting up a new one. This is the second Thanksgiving week-long outage we've had! Sorry......

I'm puzzled. I must be looking at the wrong place. For example, here is a link (http://rukind.com/music/gdtunes/Blackbrd.htm#J3) to the tab for the bridge of Blackbird, which is in the Grateful Dead tab section of the site. Or here's the tab for Terrapin Station (http://rukind.com/music/gdtunes/Terrapin.htm#J5).

Oh, i see the ITunes link now, but the tabs are still there, right? It may be just a way to help support the site.

Archive.org update (http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=49553): the Dead stuff is back, although the soundboard recordings are available "for streaming only".

Grateful Dead to Allow Free Web Downloads

By DAN GOODIN, Associated Press Writer Thu Dec 1, 1:00 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO - What a short, strange trip it was. After the Grateful Dead angered some of its biggest fans by asking a nonprofit Web site to halt the free downloading of its concert recordings, the psychedelic jam band changed its mind Wednesday.

Internet Archive, a site that catalogues content on Web sites, reposted recordings of Grateful Dead concerts for download after the surviving members of the band decided to make them available again.

Band spokesman Dennis McNally said the group was swayed by the backlash from fans, who for decades have freely taped and traded the band's live performances.

"The Grateful Dead remains as it always has — in favor of tape trading," McNally said.

He said the band consented to making audience recordings available for download again, although live recordings made directly from concert soundboards, which are the legal property of the Grateful Dead, should only be made available for listening from now on.

The soundboard recordings are "very much part of their legacy, and their rights need to be protected," McNally said.

Representatives for the band earlier this month had directed the Internet Archive to stop making recordings of the group's concerts available for download. But fans quickly initiated an online petition that argued the band shouldn't change the rules midway through the game.

"The internet archive has been a resource that is important to all of us," states the petition, which also threatened a boycott of Grateful Dead recordings and merchandise. "Between the music, and interviews in the archive we are able to experience the Grateful Dead fully."

The Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995 following the death of guitarist and lead singer Jerry Garcia. The group once set concert attendance records and generated millions of dollars in revenue from extensive tours.

With concert tickets now removed as a source of revenue, sales of the band's music and other merchandise have become increasingly important in an age where music is distributed digitally instead of on CDs, vinyl and cassette tapes.

And the arrival of Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes online music store, and other similar sites, means free downloads can be seen as competition, said Marc Schiller, chief executive of Electricartists, which helps musicians market themselves online.

The band sells music on iTunes and exclusive shows through its Web site.

"When the music was given away for free to trade, the band was making so much money touring that the music was not as valuable to them," Schiller said. "Apple iTunes has made digital downloads a business."

The Grateful Dead's freeform improvisational style led to vastly different sounding songs, from year to year or even night to night. A song that lasted four minutes during one performance could be stretched to 20 minutes during a different show.

Fans eager to explore the varying versions frequently built large collections of shows spanning the band's 30-year career. The band even encouraged recording of their live shows, establishing a cordoned section for fans to set up taping equipment.

Representatives from the Internet Archive didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Wednesday.

I really like rukind and have learned a bunch of songs from it but I gotta say that its only thru some miracle of ambiguity that it exists. Most of the lyrics there are technically copyrighted. Interpretation or not, if the copyrighter wanted to force the issue, I'm sure they could force the lyrics to be yanked. The chord progression would probably be fine; they're vague enough. The little .mid and .mp3s of intro licks etc., well that's melody and the courts have stated that recognizable melody is enough to infridge on copyright.

I guess we just don't look a gift horse in the mouth for as long as we can.

An interesting view on recent events from Phil Lesh, off his web site:

Last Update: November 30, 2005

An Announcement from Phil Lesh:

It was brought to my attention that all of the Grateful Dead shows were taken down from Archive.org right before Thanksgiving. I was not part of this decision making process and was not notified that the shows were to be pulled. I do feel that the music is the Grateful Dead's legacy and I hope that one way or another all of it is available for those who want it . I have enjoyed using Archive.org and found it invaluable during the writing of my book. I found myself being pulled back in time listening to old Grateful Dead shows while giggling with glee or feeling that ache in my heart listening to Jerry's poetic guitar and sweet voice.

We are musicians not businessmen and have made good and bad decisions on our journey. We do love and care about our community as you helped us make the music. We could not have made this kind of music without you as you allowed us to play "without a net". Your love, trust and patience made it possible for us to try again the next show when we couldn't get that magic carpet off the ground. Your concerns have been heard and I am sure are being respectfully addressed.
- Phil

Meanwhile, MPA plans crackdown on lyrics and chord sites on the Internet (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm)

MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed.

He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal".

Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective".

I am not making this up.

Peachy. I remember when the Sam Fox agency cracked down on HarmonyCentral.com. For several months the only mirrors who had song info were in non-US countries.

I suppose when you are a panicked, old-school business the easy way out is to litigate and crack down on people who AREN'T MAKING MONEY FROM THIS. Seriously, do you think the "rukind.com" guy is making a killing from hosting some chord and lyric info? Do these idiots think that the millions of us out there will run to the store and buy music books?

Fascists.

Get em' while you can. #BTW, FTP to archive.org and you can still suck all the SBD's you want. #FYI, see their FAQ for the 411. Keep it on the QT K..

Checked rukind a few days ago for a Dylan song. The GD songs are still there but the Dylan songs are gone. I would guess Dylan's publisher requested they be taken off. No problem with that. A man has the right to share or protect his property as he sees fit. I think I actually own the book with the song I was looking for anyway, just didn't feel like looking for it at the time.

I couldn't get to the Dylan songs either (or any non-GD tabs, really). No notice there that i could find either. Maybe it's temporary, or maybe they decided to be a Dead only site. What happens right now is when you try to go to one of the Dylan pages, you get redirected to a page that has "temporarily removed" in its url. For example, the index page: http://www.rukind.com/music/Listbd.htm. You can still see the old content in Google's cache.

http://www.rukind.com/Tabsites.htm says "The non Grateful Dead tabs have been temporarily removed from this site."

OLGA (http://www.olga.net/) seems to be still alive and well.

don't be sorry- great article. as someone who was one of the somewhat neo-hippie type dead head in the late 70s through mid 80s and became a professional and a citizen who is still a deadhead, i appreciated the descriptions by author, fans and band.
