Hey guys.

Been restringing my el-cheapo mandolin - put some D'addario J74s on it - lovely strings - but snapped one of the Es - tried to put one of the old ones on and that snapped too - is there any technique different to guitar restringing here that i need to be aware of!

But the strings - my 7 string el-cheapo mando has been transformed somewhat!!!

Cheers
Matt

Check frets.com (http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/Mandolin/MandoString/mandostring1.html). Depending on your tailpiece, you may need to pre-bend your loops to prevent them breaking.

don't hook the e's on straight vertical from tailpiece to tuners. make them take a left turn so the string takes a turn and the loop is not taking all the tension. you can also put a little graphite in the nut, in case you have a sharp edge.

I've snapped several E-strings in the past. #Now I have several sets of unused strings minus the E-strings. Is it possible to buy E-strings only?

yes it is, banjo strings will work, or go to juststrings...look athe home page here and on the right side you will see them listed.

Get a mandola. #C strings are so much nicer than E strings. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Matt, check the second tab that the string goes under as it may have a sharp edge that cuts into the string. I have found that to be the problem on several tailpieces. I use a piece of sandpaper to smooth the edge and no more problem!
