I'm looking to find a new a-style mandolin for mostly old-time and some celtic playing. It will replace my Washburn M15K. I'm looking to stay around $500. I'll be in Manhattan and Connecticut in about a week and would like advice on stores in that area where I could play several possibilities. Any input on brands would also be appreciated. Many thanks . . .

If you can ride out to Staten sland, Mandolin Bros. is the obvious choice. Then, in Guilford, CT (1218 Boston Post Rd.), there's Acoustic Music. AM may have mostly stuff above your price range but it'll be fun to try. Mando Bros. will have Mid-Missouris, which are a great option for old time and Celtic in the neighborhood of your price point. They may not have the best possible price, but paying a bit more may be worth it to get a chance to pick the specific instrument you like best.
