Progressive banjo maestro Tony Trisckha has announced he will play a three-night set of holiday-inspired performances, aptly titled Glory Shone Around, in the Tri-State area in early December. #The performances will feature works from Trischka’s critically acclaimed album of the same name, which turns Trischka’s eclectic banjo stylings and musical ingenuity toward a celebration of the season. #
And this year, fans of the fingerpicking master have even more to cheer about. #In addition to showcasing members of Trischka’s long-term progressive bluegrass band Skyline, the shape-note vocal quartet Northampton Harmony will take to the stage to reinvent some of the most familiar music of all time, as well as a few surprises. #Trischka & Co. plan on unveiling several Woody Guthrie holiday lyrics, researched at the Guthrie Archives, featuring music composed by Trischka himself. Trischka’s richly textured banjo playing will be complemented onstage by guitarist/vocalist Danny Weiss, bassist Larry Cohen, percussionist Joe Cardello and fiddler Kenny Kosek (of Jerry Garcia’s Acoustic Band.), amongst others.
Fans will be treated to holiday favorites like “Sleigh Ride,” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” as well as a tune by The Pretenders’ and a couple by Trischka himself. #In addition, traditional holiday fiddle music will combine with classically influenced carols and audience members may even find themselves hearing something truly unique: Woody Guthrie Chanukah songs and a bluegrass rendering of the nativity. #The album has been called “a satisfying and thoughtful 16 song collection that one hopes will stay in print for many more Christmases to come,” by The New York Times.
Trischka’s work has led Rolling Stone to say that his music “shows a conceptual daring that goes well beyond hot licks.” Come see for yourself. #Holiday performances will start on Dec. 6 at the Parkside Lounge in New York City and include a stop at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, NJ on Dec. 7 and at ChurchHouse Concerts in Haddam, CT on Dec. 8. #

Tony Trischka is one of the world's most innovative banjo players. Throughout his thirty-year career, Tony has defied boundaries and explored a wide variety of genres commonly considered out-of-bounds for the banjo. Tony first broke the banjo barrier with the release of his debut album, Bluegrass Light, in 1973. Both traditional tunes and original tracks shimmered with a fresh energy: the fusion of bluegrass, jazz, rock and classical. #In the years since, Tony has continued his envelope bashing, blending his talents in the studio and on-stage with such banjo luminaries as Earl Scruggs, Béla Fleck, Pete Seeger, Ralph Stanley and Steve Martin, as well as forward thinkers David Grisman, members of REM and William S. Burroughs. His album Glory Shone Around was released on Rounder Records in 1995.
