I know it's for a good cause and all but don't you think they could have picked a mandolin thats... ahhh.. a little higher up on the food chain?

True, I've played one years ago and it didn't sound too bad. I never heard of a "Samick" (I think they're made overseas). But yeah, coming from that line up of Artists, a Collings, Gibson, Weber or something up in the higher line of instuments would've probably brought in even higher bids than where it currently stands now. # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I believe Samick is the largest instrument maker in Korea, and they now have factories in China and elsewhere, too. I believe Samick makes all the overseas Epiphones and Asian Fender guitars, and I think they also make Kentucky, Morgan Monroe, Michael Kelly, and Gold Tone. That is to say, the Samick people are quite capable of doing really gorgeous work and also the cheapest work, both instruments that sound very good indeed and others that don't. I've never played a Samick mandolin, but I've played Samick guitars that were just as good as an Asian Epiphone or Fender from the same factory.

Try playing one in company.

I have a Samick electric mando, also a Morgan Monroe Beanblossom made by Samick. But I also have a round hole Astyle Kay that is autograped by Sam Bush, J D crowe, James Monroe,Dr Ralph Stanly,Melvin Goins, & Gary Brewer. Maybe I should put that one up for auction ? Currently I use it as my beater & travel Mando. What do you think ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
