Why would you want to spend 2 to 4 times less than an F5 and get the same fit, finish, playability and sound? You'd be out of your mind. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Magnum, I just got my ol '17 gibson A back from repair. It's been in the garage for about 5 years. I bought it off of ebay and the seller wouldn't take it back. A bad deal I thought. I put 400 bucks of repairs on it (frets, board plane, new bridge and a glued crack). It sounds great. I couldn't be more satisfied with it. I has such a DIFFERNT SOUND and this one is loud also. I'm very pleased. I've thought about buying a A5 type mando but I have 2 F5 types already. I don't think there would be much real difference in sound in those 2. Now I would like a bowl back.

357,
I think you do need an A. However, You have a stable full of MK F5s and a nice Eastman F4. You've become adept (by virtue of doing it) changing strings, it may be time to build the Internationl Violin kit. I have one as well as many others (see HYDRILLAs blog). Most of the really hard stuff is done for us. For about $200, you can get the kit, plans, handfull of tools and spools and finish necessary to build your own 357 #1. And judging by the help freely offered by our community of "real" lutiers, your questions won't go unanswered. Also, judging by how kind people have been when folks have posted their kit mando pictures I'm sure you'll get an A for effort.

Another point... any, carved top oval or ff hole mando will sound close to your scroll mandos. I think you need a flat top, or maybe a cant top. For what you would probably be willing to spend ($400-600) I would go with a mid mo (I got serious jones for one). If you want to go cutom, I think the Davis flat top or the Arches at ~800 and 1100 respectively for new ones can't be beat. If Scott T claimed he loved the Davis and the Arches get so many great reviews you can't go wrong.

The cant top mando (like the older Martins) also give a different tone than arch top mandos and they seem to hold value as well.

I know you like getting things to ruminate on. So, have some food for thought and a great weekend.

357, how many rooms to you have in your house? I would suggest that you use mandolins as wall hangings and establish a sort of museum, perhaps called the 357magnum Eye Candy Museum. One room for F5s. One room for As. But maybe you should also have a room for Os. Probably mandolas and octaves can split a room. But talk this over with your wife first, and make sure you have FINISHED turning the garage into the new master suite BEFORE you move her things out there. As you can see, it's not only a matter of art but a matter of home decoration to get out there and buy that A.

A two point. By golly, there it is. A compromise. I could do a two point. Carl(Fat Dad) had a nice one a few months ago and it was reasonable too.

Actaully Ive had my eye on this 92 HD 28.... Never mind.

Hey Jennings! - "...mandolins and guitars are like.....(and women)...; ya' can never have too many. Women, mandolins and guitars share several characteristics in-commom ; one such is "tempermental" - That's why when ONE gets "nasty.., mean.., ya' can't work with IT,..., pick up the OTHER/"nother" one - Come back to #1 later and all will be better - again.(Oh! NO I hear the artillery comin' - I'm outta' here..., bye!##) - Moose. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

My line of thinking is like Karen Kay's. Teens Gibson or......Loar era snakehead A. You can have a great mandolin or 2 and in a few years say.....I bought it when $$$$.....rather than "I should have bought one when". Only 4 or 5 years ago F4s and A's were much cheaper. They're still affordable!
