I'm shopping for a new mandolin (right now I'm playing a 1921 Gibson A style which, while nice, isn't cutting it) and have the problem of reading great reviews of different makers but not actually being able to hear the mandolins myself. Right now Silver Angel is my top choice, but I still haven't actually heard one. If anyone has or could make a sound clip of a Silver Angel (or another mandolin in the three to five thousand dollar price range you'd recommend instead) being played I'd really appreciate it. My Email is indiephilosopher@yahoo.com if you could Email something as an attachment, or I could accept a transfer over AIM (castoutcutaway) or follow a link, or whatever.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I posted this once before, it has my 3 mandos on it, I take the same break on#each one for a good comparison. #The first is a '22 A4, then an '83 Flatiron A5-2, then a '99 F5L. #

Not the mandos you are looking for, but it's good to have a lot to compare to.

Thanks Chip, I've been looking for this ever since you posted the last time. I enjoyed it so much that went home and had to try to learn Beaumont Rag. When I get to where I can play it as well as you, I will say that I have arrived.

Also, Permanent Daylight, I dont what king of sound you are looking for, but you would be hard pressed to beat the sound of that Flatiron on Chip's recording.

Well, my favourite was the A4.

I borrowed our banjo players Sony mini-disc recorder and added a couple of mp3's of my Silver Angel. Picking still not too good but the mandolin sounds about right.
try again:

Here's my baby at just under a year old.

2004 SilverAngel Classic Distressed

Not sure the recording or the picking does the mandolin justice.

Howdy,

I've got a bunch of movies and mp3s (http://dasspunk.com/?cat=23) on my site featuring my Rose, BRW and Laura Ratcliff mandos. There's some more in my Bluegrass section (http://dasspunk.com/?cat=25)...

Doug, those two new clips were the most helpful so far, easily. Thanks again.

Yeah, Doug, good clean picking and good clean recording. Not to hijack the thread, but can you give details on the rocording hardware? Old mini-disc or new, what mic, etc?

Well, I usually shy away from shameless self-promotion, but here's Josh Pinkham playing one of mine: #
