A couple of weeks ago I took an unexpected detour to the hospital for a couple of days. The hospital is near Hans' house and he stopped up to see me and brought this beauty along to chear me up. At the time it was in the white with no frets but we were stumming it and whoa! Now that it's finished, I can't wait to give it a test run! I love the look and the tone has got some serious Mojo!

Hey, DNestler, you're right, it does bear a resemblance to my Arrow G-style. I also saw a Rigel in the rigelfest post (Jimmy Gaudreau (sp?) model) that had that assymetrical bottom point as well. Looks like that design is starting to get around. I hope the owner is as happy with this one as I am with my "G."

Well, thanks folks, you're all too kind! The tone of the instrument is very F-5 sounding. When pushed, it works well for bluegrass, and has a heck of a WOOF. It also has a rather jazzy sound to it when you back off.
The whole idea was to make a non-F-5 that sounded like one. I was also trying to get a bigger sound out of it and consequently thought that moving the soundholes out would make for a larger vibrating area. Reverse dolphin holes were chosen because they follow the rim of the instrument and cut across a minimum of grain lines. They sit approximately 1" (total) farther out that regular F-holes. I don't think that the shape of the holes makes much difference. The Lestock "pointlet" was chosen at the last minute for those sitdown folks that like to plant the instrument on their knee. It makes a lot more sense than the F-5 point, and doesn't dig into your leg.
In all, I'm quite satisfied with the prototype. It's Italian spruce and very hard flatsawn maple back. I feel that I could direct the tone qualities with top and back materials with the same predictability that I use for my M23's. I'll have it at IBMA for those interested in a test drive.

I just got back from Hans shop and I got to play the 2 1/2 pointer. I have to say he really has a mandolin that is as versatile as it is unique. If you want to play bluegrass it can give you that bluegrass sound. #It can be played to get that smooth jazz sound. Classic is also handled very well by this mandolin. #
In my opinion this mandolin could be called the chameleon because it adapts to the music you want to play. I am lucky to live so close and get to try out his new creations. He has come up with a real winner in new design along with his standard excellence we have all come to recognize.

I had the chance to play the mando on Saturday and again yesterday. It has opened up some and is really going to turn some heads at IBMA. If you are there stop by Hans booth and check it out along with his other mandos.
You won't be disappointed.

By the way, I seem to recall you telling me about Labor Day time how "conservative" you were about your mando building. I'm beginning to think that, considering how soon after that this one is done, that you're were hiding parts in a cabinet somewhere............

Actually, I've built everthing classic that I can think of except a 3 point cello (shudder)! It's time for me to apply some innovative thought to the mandolin both externally and internally. I'm looking forward to it.
