Once again it's time for something out of the ordinary. On October 8th Sutter Creek, CA, becomes the center of the Jug Band universe as 11 bands from around California (and one from Eugene, Oregon) celebrate this unique American music! And it is FREE!!!

Yes, there is jamming! Yes, there will be mandolin and banjolin playing! Yes, there are kids workshops! Yes, there will be food! Yes, there will be fun!

It all starts at 10:30am in Minnie Provis Park. At 5pm we move into the beautiful Sutter Creek Theater to avoid the evening chill. In case of rain the entire festival will be in the theater. Find out more at jugfest.org (http://www.jugfest.org)

"The essence of the jug band idea is people jamming music for free and for fun with an extremely unrehearsed, spontaneous nature to it." ---Geoff Muldaur.

Bill Monroe's first version of the Bluegrass Boys had John Miller on jug for about three months. He was finally replaced by a bass player, Amos Garen.

Honest, Moose. You can look it up. I did (googled "Bill Monroe jug player). I learned about this a few years ago, surprised me. In the late twenties/early thirties the jug was used as a bass instrument by white bands (such as the Prairie Ramblers) as well as the more blues oriented bands (Mempis Jug Band).
