A few other threads here on the Cafe got me to thinking about some of the great tools we have now to enhance our enjoyment of the mandolin.
Several years ago I bought a minidisc machine, a Sharp 722 to be exact. #I can't say enough good things about minidiscs. #After struggling for years with cassette recorders, the minidisc is an absolute breath of freah air! #It's so much easier to record, find what you want and make edits, I don't know how I could live without it. #I use mine to record rehearsals, my own practice sessions and music lessons. #I also use minidisc extensively for my radio programming as well.
So here's this puppy. #A Sharp 722 (which was discontinued years ago) along with a Soundpro SPSM1 single-point T stereo mic. #I connect the mic using a right-angle jack which can be obtained at Radio Shack. #I find the battery life is great too. #I also like the "jog dial" feature, whcih allows you to scroll through the function menus by rotating the dial. #Very easy to use and it sounds great.
So what are some of your favs?

So I saw a guy at Winfield recording with an I-pod with some sort of mic attachment on it. I'm completely MP-3 illiterate anyway, but who knows the scoop on this?

One of my faviorite tools/gadgets is the spring hook. I use it for many things mando related and non mando related.
The one in the picture item A, the push pull is my fav.

Jim, it's likely to be the iTalk (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italk/) or a similar product. They are not very efficient passed voice recording, as they produce 8kHz, 16 bit mono WAV files. The handy side is the capacity...

I also agree that minidiscs are a great thing if you have one that can hook up a mike. Toss that puppy in the middle of the floor and pick away, then listen and critque(sp?)
I do that while on a run, nice.

Second favorite gadget is the Presonus Firebox A->D firewire computer interface (http://www.presonus.com)
$300 now, and it runs mikes into your home computer with much better sound quality than was available in most studios as recently as a couple years ago!

I got to hang out with Mark, the inventor of the Intellitouch at Winfield and what a facinating story of having an idea, figuring out how to finance it and develop it and turn it into a great success. They still will repair them no matter what happens and build them in the States for complete quality control. Of coarse Seiko,Yamaha and Korg are all over the idea now, but think about who gave us the original when you need a new tuner.

It's the Dr. Slick fishing plier (although I just use them for string changes). Comes with a handy holster (not shown). No joke, these things are great!
Now this post beats any other on the board! #Thanks Pete, you may not be THE man, but you're one of them.

Hey, winter's coming. Don't have a pic of my boards online but do have a pic of my boots. Nice basic black with just a glint of sparkle and color on the buckles. It's amazing how many ski boots are really dorky looking. I love my Dobies; simple; no gadgets; and they ski great.

Well I was trying to stick with mandolin-related gadgets.
Here's favorite #2...a guitar/mandolin stand from Konig & Meyer. #What I especially love about this baby is it folds up and fits into my backpack. #It's incredibly sturdy and the guitar/mandolin will not tip over. #Since there is no neck support you don't have to re-adjust it between instrument changes.
