Cool, Troika, these are pretty wild. I just find it kinda interesting at how the engraving changes from one to another. I understand the tailpieces, which are hand engraved, also are unique to each instrument.

Nice...reminiscent of the fancy banjo inlays of the 1890's.

Yeah, very much in the spirit of the late 1800s and early 1900s although the earlier stuff was even more subtle and exquisite, no criticism of Collings intended. It's fantastic to see that type of work on a production (albeit very high end) instrument and Collings is to be commended. Besides, the hourly cost of this type of highly-skilled work has gone up considerably since 1898. See below -- an inlay frm the 1890s.

Not to hijack this thread, but lets talk about all those other things that make Collings instruments so incredibly "right". Like the perfect neck-set, bubble-arch, Geometry with a capital, fat tone, clean EVERYTHING.:p

Oh yeah, my point.

If you like her head, you should see her back. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

As long as we're showing off backs, mine also has a one-piece. Collings does have some nice wood, don't they?

Regarding my earlier comment on how each tailpiece is unique, I present mine:
