Here is some information on the Kentucky Dawg. The first link is to an article and the second is a great site with different mandolin sound clips including a Kentucky Dawg. Good luck on your mando search.

Never heard of the shop. Where are they? What's their website? Don't worry, I'm not going to snipe either of those mandos. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Their site says "call for price" on the instruments. I saw the Dawg listed but not the Ratliff.

I think the Ratliff is a better name but I've never seen a Dawg

Those are both terrific looking instruments. I don't know anything about that shop, but I've played both Ratliffs and KY Dawgs. That 3-pt Ratliff is stunning, and the Dawgs were designed by Monteleone and built under his guidance. They can vary in sound quality, but they are generally thought of as very good (if not the best) Pac-Rim instruments. If you had a chance to play them and liked them, you couldn't go wrong with either, really.

As I understand it, the Kentucky is a Pac Rim made instrument. the Ratliff was hand-made right here in the hills of Tenn by one of America's best builders, who I happen to know. Audey is a fine musician, good guy and very good builder. No brainer to me.

As Hester pointed out with his article, the Ky Dawgs were made by the esteemed luthier Sumi-San in Japan.

Sumi is selling his own Sumi Mandolins these days as well as making the Sullivan Madolin sold by the Sullivans of First Quality Music.

I've never played a Dawg but the two Sumis I've playe dhave sounded great. Played one at IBMA last year and the pres of our bluegrass association has one.
