I was under the impression the backs were laminated arched with a brace. That's what Gruhn's book says as well.

Mine wasn't, #68386, late 50's/early 60's.

Per Paul Fox's book in 1933, yes, they had a flat back. Usually mahogany but sometimes maple (p.116) There are photos of one of those on Google that's mis-labeled an A-40. From a sold listing on Reverb.

I had one in the 70's .. .. .. Amber- natural finish , Mahogany neck , ff holes , rosewood fingerboard glued to the top
top carved, back, Arched , pressed Mahogany 3 ply, as seen via un bound back corner - edge.
sides may have been solid mahogany or more 3 ply, it was not visible..
Kluson tuners buttons of a plastic that was prone to deteriorate.. with age..

It played great .. :mandosmiley:

All? i couldn't afford to own all of them, just one ,, I later got an Oval hole A from 1922..
Sold the A 40..
