Just a quick plug for the arrangement of "What a Friend" (i.e. "What a Friend We Have in Jesus") that appeared in the most recent Mandolin Magazine (the one with Sharon Gilchrist on the cover). Check it out, it's very nice. I played it sunday morning.

If the arranger is reading this post, thank you! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I love the F/F#dim/C transitions, and the D7 with the melody on the 9th (open E string). Coolness.

Is that tab anywhere else?

It's in Joe Carrs column in Mandolin Magazine (http://www.mandolinmagazine.com). Subscribe, you'll be glad you did.

Oh yes. Excellent magazine for all persuasions. I don't have it with me, but "if memory serves me right" (as Chairman Kaga always says), i think that tab was adapted from a Mel Bay tenor banjo book.

The same issue has a killer blues mandolin solo. There's always some old-timey and some bluegrass, plus Don Stiernberg's jazz column, which is by itself more than worth the cost of the subscription. And they even sent me a free pack of strings when i subscribed!

But for real, get the mag, you'll not be sorry.

I got one pack of J-74s from them and another from our good Scott Tich, at about the same time. I was set with strings for a whole month! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

glauber,

Several items: A) Your a better mandolin player than me, 'cause it'll take me a while to get that to performance level (even in a forgiving church setting), B) Played through it last night and was haunted (in a good way) by big emotions from my past (i.e., VBS, tent revivals, Baptist summer camp, etc.), C) What a great arraingement!

Now for the bad: I never got my free strings either, but it was my fault. Something about suscribing AFTER some date, but alas, it's not always good to be early - ha. That said, it is a wonderful magazine and I'm glad I got on their subscription.
