Rock covers a lot of different styles. Are you talking Chuck Berry, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Guns 'n Roses, or what? The pentatonic scale can be used for rock, blues, bluegrass or most any improvising. Here are a couple of websites from Cafe posters that have a lot of resources:

Niles Hokkanen (http://www.btinternet.com/~john.baldry/mando/hokkanen.html)

Martin Stillion (http://www.emando.com)

Play what sounds good to you. One of the advantages of playing rock, IMHO, is that it shouldn't be bound by the rigidity of other forms. I'm just a hack, but I just started with guitar transcriptions and played with them until I had something I liked.

Listen to some Steve Earle my friend. Copperhead Road is a good place to start.

I've been playing Procul Harem's "Whiter Shade of Pale" using mando for the keyboard riff. It works really well, especially the tremolos on the longer notes.

If you want to figure out how to play rock on a mandolin, pick a rock song you like, play it on your mandolin, and see what happens.

Check out the version of Whiter Shade of Pale on the first Psychograss CD. Changes key between most solos and Tim Obrien does the vocals.

As to rock mando, am I correct to assume you are playing electric mando? If not I don't think your going to be too satisfied with the tonal palet.

Darn it, I thought it was my idea -- although if I'm thinking the same way as those guys, I must be doing something right. Now the challenge is to find the first Psychograss album, which appears to be out of print...

Check out String Cheese Incident. Michael Kang plays an electric 5-string solid-body mandolin.

howdy mayhem, i'm really new to all of this, got my 1st mandolin about a week ago...been playing guitar all my life, just decided to try mando. There is some cd's out there, if you play by ear, they called like "Pickin' on ZZ Topp" or "Pickin' on Eric Clapton". I'm not sure, from your post, if this might be what you're lookin for... these are, like bluegrass versions of rock songs...really cool if your're into it...talk later...have a good'n

Check out former Blood Oranges member Jimmy Ryan (http://www.jimmyryan.net). He plays his Flatiron and a solid-body 5-string on his and other artists' rock and alt.country oriented CDs.
