I started using these over a year or so ago and I swear they were much cheaper then the current $17+ price???

I had gotten a dozen or so and hadn’t checked the pricing in a long time. I like these strings but at that price I will go with J74s instead...

Did I miss something? Is this tariff related? Were they always this pricey and I wasn’t paying attention? Lol

Thx!
Dan

Yea, I remember buying these about a year ago at around $13.00 a set. What a bummer! They're great strings on my Silverangel, and last a long time.

IMO the best string for tone and price is the Dunlop DMN1140 nickel wound.

String selection depends a lot on the individual instrument. The monels don’t sound great on every mandolin, but sound great on enough of mine that I keep a supply around. They do last a long time too.

I just tried out a set of Monel alloy from Curt Mangan and D'Addario on the mandolin I play most. I don't care for the tone... too bright. And of course string choice depends on the instrument , players technique and tonal preference. That written, I am a Curt Mangan fan and will continue to use their PB alloy strings. This company produces excellent quality strings. Meanwhile we can all write about what hasn't gone up in cost...… hmmmmm … R/

The absolute best business model is to have a product people think is too high a price as they buy it.

I just got a code for 20% off - 14YEARS

I have a great mandolin that leans towards the modern sound. I have tried several strings. Sounded good to great with all of them but I prefer that traditional Gibson/Bluegrass sound. These are a good match with my mandolin, balanced, loud (my wife and daughter are not sure that is a good thing) and more traditional sounding. Also I was thinking of replacing the tuners on my mandolin, seemed I was constantly tuning (more than a normal mandolin). But for what ever reason they stay in tune much better. So overall very happy with them.

Not to hijack, but tuners are generally the least likely cause of tuning issues. Nut slots the most.

I see them at 13.47 on their site. Can’t tell if that includes the 20% off sale.

So I was missing something!
Thank you! I had never ordered direct from them, always through an internet string website. I was able to get them for a little over $10 per set by ordering 12 sets and getting the 20% discount. Which is great, cause I usually buy in bulk anyway.

There is a Cyber Monday code for an additional 20% off of strings at the Curt Mangan website (BFCM20), if you purchase 12 sets you get an additional 20% off. I paid $8.62 per set of Monel strings shipped to my house. That's a decent amount off of the $13.47 price if you buy one set, I felt it was worth it to stock up.

NFI, just seemed like a good deal.

12 sets would be 3 lifetime's worth for me........seriously.

Mom goes crazy buying Charmin when it goes on sale -- I think she has an entire closet full of that stuff. Great for some people, I just don't want all my holdings to be in toilet paper when I die..........

I know what you mean! I change strings after every 2 or 3 four hour gigs and we average 4-5 gigs a month so I buy at least 12 sets every 6 months. My luthier looked at the strings he took off and commented that my strings were dented on the fret side all the way up the neck and needed to be changed - it was after 1 gig!

Math not my strong point but I can't get the same cost figure that you say you got on the Mangan website ! 20% off of $13.47 is not not $8.62 according to my figures !

If you get 12 sets the price is $10.78 per set.

$8.62 is 20% off the $10.78 price

I didn't see the 12 sets price ! I just confirmed that math is not my strong suit !! Neither is mandolin playing but that's another story ! You did a great job on your purchase ! I don't care for the monels on my F mandolins but really like them on my ovals !

I have a Collings MT2O with a one piece birdseye maple back, the monels give a really nice mellow to a rather bright instrument. The elevated fretboard seems to give it a little more F hole character and with monels you can even chop a little.

It’s nice to have the same set on two instruments because my 3rd mando benefits most from the Custom Medium set.

And don’t feel bad about the math, I can do kinetics calculations for work but need a calculator to figure out a tip. I admit I double checked my math more then once!
