Hi all!

I'm just getting started and would like to know where I might get some specific wood.

I'm looking for red spruce for the top and birds eye maple for the back and sides. #I would like to carve both a one piece top and a one piece back.

Any suggestions where I might find wood for this project?

I'v looked but can't seem to find wood that would allow me to do this but I'm sure someone here can point me in the right direction!

Thanks,

Be ready to settle for a two piece red spruce top or a one piece of another species. Red spruce trees big enough for one piece mandolin tops are few and far between.

Thanks!

Maybe Bruce will drop in and let me know if he has anything on hand that would help me out!

I get my Red spruce from Old Standard Woods and sitka spruce from Orcas Island tonewoods.

I gave up my mill in Vermont in the early 90's, so I'm not the best source for the woods you're after--both East Coast woods...
I will be making my first Red Spruce trip in over 10 years this coming Fall, so things should be happening then...

Old Standard is indeed a good bet for Red Spruce--I've seen some beautiful stuff come out of their mill....

For birdseye, I'd check out Woodfinder (http://www.WOODFINDER.COM/)...
It's a fairly common figure in a common species, but you need to sort through the stuff to find a suitable piece for a well-figured mandolin back.
One piece backs are not out of the question. #The wood is milled on the slab, so 11" wide boards are pretty common....

If you strike out with these sources, I do have both birdseye and red spruce for mandolin, but nothing that glows in the dark...

Luck!

Many thanks to all. Bruce I may take you up on some of the non-glow in dark if I can't find some that does ;-)

Sandy Pond Hardwoods (http://www.figuredhardwoods.com/) is within 100 miles of you.....
They would have some nice birdseye for a mandolin...

There are others in your area milling birdseye maple. Did you check out Woodfinder?
Luck!

Bruce,

Again, many thanks! Yes, woodfinder was great! Looks like there are a pretty good number of suppliers in my area that I didn't know about.

Thanks for all your help!

Bergeek,
I live in Va. too. Some time soon I am planing to take a trip to Dunlap. They are a wood suplier in Veina, and will let me pick through piles of maple.
