I am looking at buying an old Washburn mandolin, and I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on it's age and particularly on it's model number. The label says this is a M-3SW, but that model number refers to an F style. The serial number is 856323. Any help would be appreciated

Here are two images of the case. From the what I can glean on the internet, it seems this logo hasn't been used for close to 20 years, can anyone confirm that?

There were lots of Washburn branded mandolins brought into Australia in the early 80s and this is likely one of them. Well built in one of the better Japanese factories who also made Epiphones at that time. I was working for the importers at that time and saw at least one Epiphone in a shipment of Washburns. From dim memory the M-3 style were that A model at that time, rather the then current F-5 shape. The higher level mandolins were fully carved and rather good mandolins. Few seem to come into the market and would be worthwhile getting when possible.

I had two similar vintage ( late 70s.. early 80s.) both made in Japan.
One was Jethro Burns model F style. The other I got from Chet Atkins.. a two point custom made for Jethro Burns.
I bought the F style for $900 new from Mandolin Bros. in1980.
The 2 point for $600 this would have been 1990.

Excellent instruments.

The 3-SW was a fine mandolin. And with case... ? If made in Japan, I'd buy it.

If not, it would depend on the playability and tone. (and price of course)

As to the serial number and date..a possibility ....
Washburn commonly used the first two digits as the year of manufacture.

Thanks for the interesting replies guys. It's playable now that I've adjusted the neck and bridge, and it has a big bottom end sound. It seems very sturdy. I have decided to buy it :)

Hi, I have what looks to be an identical model, but it has 'M-3S-BR 81...' serial. Yours is likely built in or around 1985, mine, 1981.

Most likely built in Japan, or maybe S. Korea and if it's anything like mine, it'll sound lovely!

I see you bought it, so I know you'll be enjoying it.

Have fun,

Owen Llewellyn.
