Does anyone know where I can find some diagrams or specs for X bracing a mandolin top.

There are two basic aproches to X bracing, one crosses the X right under the bridge, and the other way is like an archtop guitar where the legs of the X pass directly under the adjusters of the bridge. This puts the cross joint an inch or two ahead of the bridge.

Lawrence Smart also has another way to do it. It is easier to reference it than it is to describe it. He described it, complete with sketches, in his article "The Modern Mandolin" in American Lutherie back in 1998 (1997?). I must sound like a broken record when I keep saying "There is no substitute for reading."

TNMANDO,
Check out the Musical Instrument Makers Forum. They have a library of archived discussions that cover this topic. There might even be some drawings available. Their url is www.mimf.com.
