Here's my Glenn A, made by Allen Jones here in Missouri. #It's #59 that he's made and has been a great instrument for me to learn on. #With a varnish finish, it was a great buy for the price. A nice handmade alternative to a pacrim for under $1000. I added a price tailpiece and a sullivan bridge and it really sings now. I'm ready to move on to an F for personal preference, but I've been really pleased with this one.

Here is one of my A's that I still have. Birch back and sides, spruce top. This is my favorite for just playing at home, it's got the sweetest tone. For playing out I have another oval hole that seems to cut through a little better.

Phishfan- Allen does have a website:

He's a real nice guy and does great work. #It's not as polished as a factory made mandolin, but the tone is great and I like that look. #I'm gonna list in the classifieds next week if a friend doesn't scoop it up.

Here's my own little AM-5. Red spruce top, quilt maple back, sides, and neck(all from the same block of wood). Built for a client who wanted to try a different neck shape, and it didn't work out, but I loved it, and happily bought it back! Slightly shorter scale, too, and maybe that's what does it for me, as this is the first mandolin that has never tired my left hand. http://www.proulxguitars.com/clients/photo_test/images/MC1.jpg

Here is my plain old Kentucky KM-200S. #It's a Japanese-built model, which I purchased new in 1982. #It's been a solid, reliable instrument over the years. #Except for a graphite bridge saddle, everything on it is original.

As much as I like the mandolin, I want to replace the ugly plastic pickguard some day.

I believe it was more like $7000-7500 and happened in late '76. If it was $10K, then Tut upped the price (his prerogative) after offering it to me for $7k. I had just bought my first Loar for $6K a month before Tut called. At the time the Loar A-5 did not have quite the mystique that it has now. It was hard to swallow paying more for an A-5 than an F-5 when the A-5 didn't have "scroll".
