How do you tell if the tuners on your mandolin are Grovers or Schallers or Kluson, etc...?
Are there any specific characteristics?

post a photo and then there can be a guessing contest and vote.

An easier option would be to get hold of the Stew Mac catalogue - most of them are illustrated in there - or look at their website

Stewmac's online catalog has some downloadable scale drawings, at least for the Grover and Schaller tuners, in .GIF format. I've had copies on my computer desktop for a long time. The shape of the plates, bushings, and position of the screwholes, are distinctive for each. Your only task is to memorize each one....

Doesn't have to - there are plenty that Stew Mac don't stock - post a picture of some and see if we can identify them. I'd do it myself but I'm just about to install Tiger.

Let's band together and commission five different sets of tuners. #Each member would contribute... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Lets band together and try to get someone to manufacture a top quality set of mandolin tuners that are light, attractive, functional, and affordable!

Any manufacturers out there listening? The market is here. Don't make me have to do it myself!

You forgot "nonmagnetic" so you can get through customs without going through a strip search. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
