Tape doesn't work for me. I use a small strong U-shaped magnet (other magnets will work too) to keep the loop from popping off the hook and it works amazingly well. It also helps lift the string up from between the other strings once I've threaded it though so I can grab it with my fingers and bring it over to the tuning knob.
I also despise sticking my fingers on the sharp ends, so I use a beading plier (the one that creates the "eyes" in beading wire) to make a little loops at the end after I cut the excess off the new string. No more blood-letting.
You're all welcome.

One of my tips from way back. I carry a small rare earth magnet in my case for this. Excellent way of doing it. If I don't bleed a bit it doesn't seem right

I use a pair of rosary pliers and the magnet sticks to the side of it.

Anyone looking for the magnets can find them in most craft stores.
