View Full Version : Cafe Classifieds Misplaced Ads

Do we have many more Cafe members placing ads in the wrong categories as of late?
Perhaps it is just me that takes issue with this and it doesn't really matter to anyone else or the Cafe monitors? If that is the case than so be it and I will deal with my own OCD issues.
Personally, I find the Cafe well run, a great resource and the classifieds especially helpful when MAS strikes. It would be nice if all the members used some judgement as to where to place their ads and to donate to the Cafe upon making a sale. I realize that in the forum there can be some grey trying to determine where a thread fits best. I see no grey in determining that a guitar or a banjo no more belongs in the mandolin section than a mandolin belongs in the section reserved for violins.
If I am just being petty I will not be upset by being told so.

Thanks for the thread!
I completely agree with your comments. Is it THAT difficult to figure out what section to put your sale item?? I think NOT!

I have been wanting to post this for some time now, thanks. If I want a guitar I will look in guitars, not mandolins. How hard is it to figure out. Some are stores that know better. I would not buy from a misplaced store ad looking for more exposure for their products.

I highly doubt that site sponsors are deliberately placing ads in the Mandolin section for "more exposure".

Why then would a store, who regularly places ads, misplace them on a regular basis?

I'm not so sure and think this is sometimes the reason and tend to agree with pops1. I do not attribute to non clarity. It would be difficult to not understand that a guitar is not a mandolin.
If not for more exposure, what other reasons can you attribute this to? Perhaps you have other explanations that I have failed to consider and I would concede that any that you do have are sometimes possible. I, personally, just can't think of any other reasons. Also, I haven't really noticed if the misplaced ads are the work of site sponsors or individual cafe members as I have not personally scrutinized the source of the misplaced ads. Pops1 did say stores and keep in mind that not all stores that use the classifieds are site sponsors.

It's obviously for more exposure, and it bugs me too. I'd have no issue with moderators deleting guitar adds in the mandolin section.

Now that you mention it, it is dismaying to wander through a garden of mandolins, only to stumble over a banjo. I noticed it, yes, mission accomplished, but since I wasn't looking for a banjo, it does nothing to engender a positive view towards the offer.

Yeah, I have noticed that trend too but chalked it up to folks being lazy and posting in the first category. I never thought about the more exposure angle. I never click on anything other then mandolins in the mandolin category any way. It is probably not worth a mod's time to police the classifieds.

Speak of the Devil, currently the very first ad in the mandolin section of the classifieds.......

NFI (aint that the truth!)
Actually, the first two ads are for guitars, the second one being from a well known retailer who should know better.

Actually, I look at this the opposite way... There are a few stores and individuals who never advertise anything except mandolins in the mandolin classifieds. Those are the stores and individuals that I would purchase from.
I take names and make lists.
dhergert, you are seriously bugged by this.

I kinda like it. I have gotten some really good deals from eBay and the cafe on things that were placed in wrong categories , thus being missed by people that only search in the specific cataglory that they expect the item that they are looking for to be listed in. I search all cataglories.

Well, not really. Copy and paste is pretty casual.
Looks like the guitars have been removed from the mandolin section so this thread has already accomplished something.

When looking for a mandola, you have to check the mandolin category and the CBOM category, but this thread makes me wonder if they go under guitars and violins as well? Anyway, it's a messy world folks, c'est la vie.

As someone who posts to the classifieds regularly, I can tell you that its an easy mistake to make. The default setting is "Mandolins" so if you aren't paying attention; regardless of what you are posting, it ends up in the mandolin section. If you have already posted it, you cannot modify that one aspect of the ad. ... Essentially you have to delete the ad and start over. ...I'm not saying this to excuse those who make the mistake, because with the ease of copy an paste, this can be done fairly quickly. However I can say that at that juncture, if its not a lack of attention or sheer apathy, its just down right laziness... Also, if it is a retailer, theres always the whole "time is money" aspect... just thinking out loud.

Or one could simply search using the term mandola and find everything mandola related in all sections of the classifieds.

I did not notice this was happening......not that it would trick me into buying something. That only works if somebody prices something at 25-30% of the going rate.......I might fall for that! So, if sellers want more sales and faster sales I offer this little tip. Try it and see.......
As I have stated many times on this forum and elsewhere, anybody can buy at retail -- what is the challenge in that?

The mandolin category is the default category when you post a classified ad. If you don't notice that or forget to go to the drop down category list, it's easy to accidentally post a guitar in the mandolin section.

I haven't looked - but how many of the ''misplaced ads.'' are from regular Cafe members ?. I've seen most of 'em on here,& i've often wondered if the advertiser simply made a mistake & then didn't know how to correct it ?.
One other thing i'd like to address - Just how much of a Gibson banjo needs to be 'replaced' before it's no longer a Gibson ?. I've seen a few on here with replacement necks / tone rings etc. still advertised as Gibsons. I have NO doubt whatsoever that the instruments are as good as the owners say,but .... ?. I also have no doubt that they describe the instruments as what they ''appear to be'' & i don't doubt the honesty of the owners for a second - but can they still be described as a Gibson banjo ?.
A ''grey area'',
