I recently posted a number of videos on ideas for practicing more efficiently. I hope these help some folks get more out of the time they spend on the instrument.

Pete,

I wonder where you think playing with a metronome falls in the "practice" vs. "play" spectrum? Is it just practice or somewhere in the middle?

A very nice video series and one that is motivating me to dial in my practice more.

Pete,

I wonder where you think playing with a metronome falls in the "practice" vs. "play" spectrum? Is it just practice or somewhere in the middle?

I think it could be either, depending on
1) is it just a sound to sync to (play)
2) is it a tool to force myself to play more accurately, especially very slowly (practice).

And there are plenty of areas in between...

Are there main topics you can list for each video?

Great videos, Pete. I liked the challenge of thinking about short, medium, and long term goals. I set a short term goal of having 20 jammable songs, meaning songs that I can play an intro to, have two different breaks, I know the chords, and of course can play smoothly (I’m coming up on 3 years of playing). I have about around 10 at the moment, with other songs in various stages of developments. Now that I write that, maybe 15 is a more realistic goal.

I have some ideas for medium term goals (adding some cross picking, being able to improvise occasionally in a jam..). I found the long term goals harder to think about — I feel like my ignorance starts to loom larger (you don’t know what you don’t know). I could only come up with being able to be capable of playing in a band, improvising regularly, trying a genre other than bluegrass....

Anyone else have some goals you would share?

Pete,
Many thanks for the videos. I've been floored by how well the 10 minute thing works!

A long term goal might be:

Improvise comfortably in Sam Bush style
Compete at the Winfield mandolin contest
Learn enough Gypsy jazz to be solid at my local jam
Be in a semi pro Bluegrass band
Write and record my own music

And etc.
