Well here is the first picture from Andy of my new Driftwood.
I thought I had my mind made up as to finish, but after seeing the actual back, I'm begining to have second thoughts. It be ashame to cover up any of the figure.

What do you think ? Do you think this will make a mandolin?

Thanks for looking.

b.pat that definitely is some killer quilt, what were you thinking on the finish? Personally I like a stained quilt but with that kind of figure I would not want a burst because the dark edges would cover up alot of the curl. I think deciding on the finish is the hardest thing to decide on, for me seeing a picture of the exact color on another mandolin helps tremendously. You look like you have an awesome mando being born, good luck!

That back looks like the lunar surface. Very cool.

Awesome quilt. I definitely wouldn't cover it up.

Can't wait to see the finished product. There are some great looking mandos on the Driftwood site.

Germain,

No big deal really. The shading on the top was not turning out quite the way I had invisioned it. To Andy's credit he never hesitated. No problem, we will just do another one.

You know, you can tell a lot about a builder [and a person] when his first and only concern is that the customer be completly satisfied.

Pat, she looks great! That back is killing me!

From the pic, it looks like the body is quite deep... Is it just the photo or are you going for a different tone with a deeper body?

have you come to a descision on the finish... i was just looking at hillburns black top with blonde back and sides, for some reason, the blacktop makes the grain on the back pop out even more...just a thought.:D

John,

I love that idea. The only problem is that I already own Driftwood #006 (http://www.driftwoodmandolins.com/Mandolin006.html)

Germain,

I hope that's just the camera angle, If not, it appears that I am going to have about a 7 fret neck.

I think Andy is staining in the next day or so. I'll add a few more pictures as soon as he is finished.I think this is the second most exciting part. [The first is opening tha case for the first time]

so you're the driftwood 6 guy, thats such an awesome mando, i'm completely jealous, and about having 2 black tops, well the driftwoods more of a "brown leather" than a blacktop, birds of a feather... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
