For some reason, I was thinking of Scheonberg (sp?) today. So, I practiced whole-tone scales on the mando. They sounded gypsy-esk. I don't recall Scheonberg's stuff having that type of flavour. Did it?

Anyways... that sultry, sexy, Latino, Gypsy, slow, minor, urrr... kinda music is what I like! (On the mandolin, at least...) So... who has any tips? (Who to listen to, how to play it, scales..., etc.)

Thanks!

Welp... #No replies. #I guess this is a stupid question... #That's okay! #I can deal with that...

Maybe it's because of my first paragraph? #I'm talkin' Shern-burg... #(I don't know how to spell his name.) #Wasn't he the whole-tone dude? #I could be (and probably am) wrong...

Schónberg wasn't the "whole tone dude", he was the "12-tone dude" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Whole tone scales were used frequently by Debuusy, Ravel, Respighi and others.

Hope this helps.

Yes, Yes! This helps tremendously! As usual, I had things mixed up! I love that romantic type music, as written by the likes of the composers you mentioned. (Debussy, etc.) My recollection of Schonberg (as I tried to convey in my first post) was simply that his (Arnold's) compositions did not have that...ur.... romantic jive goin' on. Now it all makes sense. He was "atonal" The ones you mentioned were whole-tonal...

Thanks for your insight... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Do you play any Django material? Try Nuages. The melody isn't too hard, it is a balad so you don't have to worry about speed and the way the melody lays on top of the chords is way cool.

Well, thank-you 250sc! Is this song on a c.d. that I can buy from a store? What is the title of the c.d.?

Thanks.

"Nuages" is available on the album, "Souvenirs" by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grapelly, with The Hot Club of France on the London/Decca label, part of their "Jazz Recollections" series.

Odnamnool, how about "Intimo" from the Grisman/Bush album? That's one fine, sultry tune.

Odnamnool,
There is another nice version of Nuages on Joe Cravin's Django Latino.

I also agree with Eric about Intimo. Great chord changes to solo over.

Both of these tunes are just made for expressive tremilo.
