I've been having problems with arthritic joints in my hands for the past 15 years or so, and just found out that they make finger splints to help with the twisted and collapsed joints, like these: https://www.ohmyarthritis.com/Shop-Splints/Finger-Splints/Oval-8-Finger-Splints.html
Does anybody have any experience with devices like these? I'm wondering if they help, and if playing mandolin while wearing them is possible.

Hmmm, didn't know something like this was around.
I use Diclofinac 3% for my arthritic left hand and seems to work pretty well.

Paraffin dips can help; they've been used for generations. Not a cure, but it will alleviate the discomfort.

Paraffin dips can help; they've been used for generations. Not a cure, but it will alleviate the discomfort.
I saw this being done at one of the PT sessions, I think I need to try it.

On two separate occasions, two different fingers, I detached the extensor tendon of a finger resulting in a mallet finger,where the finger tip drooped and I couldn't actively straighten it. The treatment is to keep it straight for like 8 weeks, 24/7,no exceptions.The usual tape and metal splints were impossible, but I used that Oval-8 splint and it was like a miracle. I could shower with it, etc and it allowed perfect healing.
Now here's the thing of it...this splint completely immobilizes the joint that it's applied to in a straight extended position. The answer to whether or not they would help you depends on which finger(s) needs help. For example, if you need it for your picking hand index finger,it would make holding a pick impossible. If you give us more information I might be able to give you better advice.

I have joints in both hands that are pretty shot, but I'm mostly interested in the distal joints(closest to the finger tip). The joint in my little finger has collapsed towards the ring finger enough that it's almost impossible to reach the 4th string in a G "chop" chord. All of the last joints on my left hand are disturbed to some extent(see picture), and that's what I'm interested in treating with these appliances. My mother had severely collapsed joints by the time she was in her 80's, and I'm worried that that will be my fate also.171494

DMSO unlocked my left pointer finger. I use it for three applications with 1% cortisone cream (no more as cortisone will thin your skin), and then by itself or wth liquid ibuprofen, every other day and not more

I just tried one of those Oval 8 playing my tenor banjo-- it's no good at all.I ended up trying to fret with the plastic on my fingertip.
Try physical therapy if you haven't already. That sometimes works wonders.
