McCoury's CD's

Just finished, one time thru each, listening to a couple of new MP3 version's of McCoury CD's I purchased from Amazon. Hard copies haven't arrived. First one is the newest by Del McCoury entitled "Del McCoury Still Sings Bluegrass". The other was by The Traveling McCoury's, self titled as "Traveling McCoury's."
Can't wait for the hard copies to arrive. I prefer the hard copies over MP3 as the hard copies have all the information on who wrote the songs, who the sidemen are, who is singing lead, backup etc. Both CD's at Amazon had 2018 release dates.

Anyway after one listen thru on each, they both sounded great. Ronnie's Mandolin, Jason's Fiddle and Kody's guitar work were all sensational. Of course Del's vocals were as good as ever. Ronnie's voice is sounding more like his Dad's these days.

The new Del album is excellent. Didn't know about the Travellin McCourys one - thanks for the heads up. Ronnie's playing is better than it's ever been.

My wife has been a Del McCoury fan for quite some time. Loves his singing voice and just his whole singing style. I put the MP3 on of Del this morning and let it roll right into the Travelin' McCoury MP3. It was her that heard Ronnie singing and she paused and said, "Sounds a lot like Del. A little raspy though. He is getting older."
I laughed and told her it was Ronnie who is a lot younger. I heard Ronnie live a couple of years ago playing alongside Jeff Austin at a "Grateful Ball" show. Both fine mandolin players. However Ronnie's playing was just so crystal clear on that Gilchrist. Just fabulous. If it would have been a contest, Ronnie and the Gil won that night.

The first time i heard this song,i thought that it was Del Singing.I then found the YouTube clip & seeing Ronnie singing,i then ''heard'' the slight differences - a great song by one of my top 5 favourite bands,

And I'm not just saying that because Ronnie 'liked' my Instagram video of Baltimore Johnny yesterday! (Though that was freaking cool! :cool:)

I was surprised the TM record wasn't a bit more 'out there' but I think they are trying to establish a good baseline of fans that aren't having to stretch too far from DMB. Kudos for Del letting the boys have at it and get themselves going before he is ready to retire.

Don't forget "Del & Dawg Live" Double CD, came out about a year ago, tons of traditional mandolin all over this. David gets more than one break on some tunes and it is cool to hear how he plays them different. A real ear opener for backing up vocals with mandolin on these traditional tunes. They are still touring as a duet sometimes, made for a really fun show of stories and pickin! Check it out:

A great CD and a great show. Saw Del and Dawg in Nashville at the Ryman two years ago. They did two sets. During the 2nd set, Ronnie and Robbie came out with Ronnie's son Evan (guitar). Jessie McReynolds joined in and Vince Gill sang a Ralph Stanley number. (It was right after Ralph's burial.) I think Dawg's wife played bass. What an overload of mandolin that was with Jesse, Ronnie and Grisman! :))
McReynolds had a blonde mandolin. Someone told me it was a Stiver.

I saw Jim & Jesse down at the open air concert at English Park,Owensboro, the weekend after the IBMA festival,back in 1992. Jesse kicked off a tune & immediately broke a string. He had a back up mandolin,so he used that - he kicked off again & broke a string on that one !!,:redface:

If I may add something ...I always loved Jesse`s Gibson mandolin`s sound and never really cared for the sound he got from the Stiver although I know Stiver makes a great mandolin, but it all depends on what the picker likes I guess...Yes Jesse has a couple of Stivers or did the last time I seen him...

Willkamm - I think that Jesse has had more than one 'Blonde' Stiver over the years. The one in the pic. above has a ''Gibson style'' Fern inlay,this one doesn't,& the fingerboard inlay is also different,

Could be the photos, but in the first one, the Blonde looks lighter. I know from the stage to where we sat, it looked real light. Come to think of it I might have a photo from that show?

He was born in July, 1929. So when I saw him, he was getting real close to 87 years old. He didn't do as much cross-picking as he's been known to, that evening, however he could certainly pick quite well by any standards. God bless him, but I had to be impressed with his dexterity.

Here are some photos. None really gives a good ID of the mandolin. We were setting about midway to the stage, in the center. My wife wouldn't stand to take the pics. She just found it rude to block someone's view. So she kind of ducked down in her seat and couldn't get much detail.

I'd tend to agree.The one in the first pic.that i posted,certainly looks lighter than the one in the second pic. It could be a relatively new one - Ol' Jesse sure likes his 'blondes' !,:grin:
