Mister, have you come to the right place (http://jazzmando.com/ii_v7_i_home_positions.shtml) or what!
There really isn't a conventional limit in terms of number of measures, but where you generally see it is at the ends of phrases, and setting up a new key center, especially in jazz (and classical music).
I love this new section!

The downside is, I start back to work next week after 8 weeks of unplanned 'vacation'... And NOW this new section shows up. How am I ever going to find the time?!

Craig, surely you negotiated in the contract with your new employer, surfing time here at the Cafe. You're in software...
Research, man.
Research!
(Glad to hear you got the gig!)

Yeah, Ted, maybe I was a little hasty when I took the job. <sarcasm tone='joke'>I guess my priorities need realignment!</sarcasm>http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yeah, Scott... #Thanks for the new section. #Might keep some of us troublemakers outta trouble (at least for a little while...) # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I played around with your progressions, Mandohack. Nice! To my ear, San Rafael, those progressions can either lead you back home or set you up for a modulation. Try Mandohack's example of Dm7-G7-C6/9 then (back home) to a plain ole C.

WOW Mandohack! #Thanks for the inspiration... #I just wrote a song using your ii-V7-I progression... At the beginning of the song! #Hah! #Leave it to me to do things backwards... #(Then again, I did write it under the influence of 3 Salty Dogs... #The drink folks, the DRINK (Not the other kind...)

It's short and sad, but it DOES have a happy ending on a C major chord. #I call it, "San Rafael."

Which brings me to my next question... #Well, maybe I should start a new "thread" for it... #Yeah, I think I should...
