If you have not played one, Bob Altman is building great varnished F5 mandolins. Charles Johnson has one fresh from Bob and I have ordered one that will arrive soon. There was a good article about Bob in OnlineAthens 7/9. I played two at SPBGMA. I thought the varnished one sounded great. Also liked the radiused finger board. I didnt like the name inlay....my only pick.

I haven't had the chance to play one of his mandolins but I'm definitely a fan of his film work. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I played one and thought the craftsmanship was quite good. I also think it sounded good, but without another instrument there to compare it with, I did not get as good a "test" as necessary.

I compared Bob's #6 to a Collings MF5(#69) and an 84 Flatiron A5-1 when I decided to order one. Mitch Simpson allowed Bob to measure several Loars and Gilchrists which put him way ahead on his own creations. I though #6 had a lot of character as well as great tone. I personally love hand made instruments and Bob is a master craftsman in my opinion. John http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
