As a longtime Grey Fox video/photo volunteer, I'm starting this 2018 topic as I have for several years in the past.

I'll be updating it throughout the year as I always do.

Stay tuned, and hope to see you there next summer!

Meanwhile, let's get started...

been going almost every year since 2005. Great festival and well put together. Good blend of great bands and great jams. I learned a lot when I started playing by going to Greyfox and learn more every year :)

I'll be working the main stage again :)

long way from CA
hope to see ya there

The first three or four years I was still living in NY and I'd be there for a full week (the Friday before the festival opened to the Monday after). Built the sound scaff, helped with monitors stuff and worked the stage for the most part.

The travel there is not necessarily as easy (or cheap) as it used to be - but working the stage has it's benefits.... I've met Sam Bush, Chris Thile, David Grisman, Marty Stuart, Del McCoury & the band, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Tim O'Brien etc. I've even jammed with a few of them backstage. Mike Marshall gave me my first lesson backstage at Greyfox while he was eating an apple :)

Would love to meet up if you're going! Let's try to get a MC meetup!!!

This will be my first year at Greyfox, and I'll be camping in Picker's Paradise. If there ends up being a Mandolin Cafe get-together, count me in!

Also, any Greygox veterans have any advice for a newbie? How is the camping, and how difficult is it to find a good spot? I know at some other festivals, getting a good camping spot can be a challenge, to say the least.

mwillis
Feb-22-2018, 2:39pm
see ya there
I was talking to the office manager and she told me that we can help clean up get paid for doing so and have a communal dinner

mbruno
Feb-22-2018, 6:29pm
The "rodeo" starts Wednesday but it's based on the line that started Monday (or the Friday before for some) - so, the earlier you get there - the better the spot you can find.

The tree line goes really quickly for obvious reasons - but if you have a few ez ups, it makes tree line less needed. If you're going solo with a small footprint, it should be easy to find a decent spot. If you're with a few folks and/or have a larger footprint, you make just need to take what you can get. There's nothing wrong with camping in the family / quiet camping provided you're okay with jamming elsewhere. I used to camp there as it made sleeping through the night really easy :)

We have a group of 10 - 20 depending on the year and setup a bunch of tarps and ez-ups for shade / coverage and hang out in Picker's Paradise too.

See ya there!

Hi Folks,
I'm back from a great week at Grey Fox. I'd been out of web contact & may not be able to catch up with Facebook and email, so please be patient.

It was an extraordinary time at the Creekside Stage, my 10th year in a row as an official media volunteer, where I accumulated about 25 hours of video with 3 camcorders. In addition to at least 5 always-top-shelf Berklee College of Music bands; 4 more emerging artist bands; mandolin moguls with Sam Bush & Sierra Hull; Molly Tuttle's encore with Billy Strings; & much more (see the link below). For the first time, what I consider four - count 'em - four special events: Interviews with Peter Rowan & Doyle Lawson by John Rossbach; remembering Doc Watson with Bryan Sutton, Billy Strings, & Joe Newberry; & good friend Akira Otsuka's Epilogue CD project: tribute to John Duffey with Akira onstage with Tim Kruzic, Kitsy Kuykendall, Ron Thomason & Jerry Douglas.

As usual, my videos will be coming out on the Grey Fox YouTube channel & Facebook page as time permits.

I looked back at the 5 decades (so far) that Peter's influenced my bluegrass journey.

They appeared at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival (https://www.facebook.com/greyfoxbluegrass/?fref=mentions) this year with Tony , their teacher and mentor , as part of the stage featuring artists from Berklee College of Music (https://www.facebook.com/BerkleeCollege/?fref=mentions). Each band was superb . I was only able to catch this act with the help of Katy Daley (https://www.facebook.com/katy.daley.9?fref=mentions) who was the MC for the stage that afternoon.
The Ruta Beggars (https://www.facebook.com/therutabeggars/?fref=mentions) have a great stage presence and high performance IQ.They generate their own songs .http://frobbi.org/images/favorites/GF18 master Berklee Ruta Beggars Trischka FR-01 (1).png

The vocals and instrumentals are stellar. We discuss the band and the Berklee College of Music (https://www.facebook.com/BerkleeCollege/?fref=mentions).
They had just come off stage . The energy level was high . We had some fun.
This photograph is courtesy of one of my best friends at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival (https://www.facebook.com/greyfoxbluegrass/?fref=mentions), Fred Robbins (https://www.facebook.com/fred.robbins.790?fref=mentions), which is saying a lot since I have so many dear ones there. Fred is a fierce artist behind any device capable of capturing images and video. You will see much of his work on the official website of Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival (https://www.facebook.com/greyfoxbluegrass/?fref=mentions).
Steve Martin's Unreal Bluegrass is three hours of the best Bluegrass across the generations , combining conversation with the legends and those becoming. Pick Peace. It's an option.
PS Tony Trischka (https://www.facebook.com/tonytrischkamusic/?fref=mentions) and I had a "one on one" chat latter in the day. Always fascinating .He has some new projects in the works.
That show will air soon.

"Epilogue" Tribute to John Duffey

I've been looking forward to sharing this event for a long time.
The project journey and the music are absolutely stunning.
Yes, I'm biased since my good friend Akira Otsuka, along with his now-departed project partner Ronnie Freeland, are the nucleus of this project, started in 2002!

David's loving wife Lynn has asked me to pass along this sad news:

It is with devastating sorrow that I must announce the unexpected and
sudden death of David Versch, aka Dancin' Dave. It appears that he
succumbed to sepsis, due to an infection he got in a cut of unknown
origin. He came down with a fever on Monday morning when we were
breaking down at the LEAF Community Arts festival. He did not wish to
see a doctor. Assuming it was the flu, we hugged and kissed him goodbye
and he left for a hotel to sleep. He began his journey back home to
Wisconsin and made it as far as Indianapolis where he was admitted to a
hospital there last night. He passed around 10 o'clock (CST) this
morning, Friday, October 26. I, along with his family, are angry with
him for being such a stubborn old goat when it came to his health. But
he went quickly, which is how he'd wanted it to be.

I am so grateful to have been able to spend this last week laughing and
dancing with him. He was a second father to me. He was easier with a
laugh or smile than anybody I know. He expressed and knew the true
meaning of joy. We should all be so lucky to have as much love and
friendship in our lives as he had. His absence will leave a hole in all
our hearts.

David did not wish to have a service, so as of now, nothing is planned.
His friends are spread all over the country, so a physical gathering is
not likely. But we can all celebrate him with a dance, or of course,
listening to Sam Bush.
