IMHO, the good ones aren't free.

I use:

SOUND FORGE
FEURIO (free trial version of this is downloadable)
CAKEWALK PRO

They are all good.

I love CoolEdit Pro. It has a very good interface and has so many good useable tricks. Like a notch filter that saved a live on the fly recording I did that had a ground loop and recorded with outrageous 60hz hum. Reprocessed it with that and took out the hum like it was never there and didn't mess up the bass or anything. I agree, you get what you pay for, but I think you can download a demo of it. YMMV

I like PowerTracks Pro Audio from http://pgmusic.com/ It has many more features than I'll ever use and at $50 is very reasonable in comparison to some of the other more popular programs.

here is the free on I usefree recorder (http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/)
Granted my teen age son had to learn it then walk me throught it... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif But it is not that hard I am just that hard headed.

I am sure the ones you pay for are much better but... I am doing a solo acustic gig now and I have beed doing some recording of my stuff and I would put my recording up against the stuff that comes out of my friends studio sound wise...it's free give it a try

Try Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

I just downloaded Audacity on jmkatcher's recommendation. It's a pretty good little program.

FWIW, "Cool Edit Pro" was bought by Adobe and is now "Audition". It is a great program.
