I was getting ready to order my stains from L.M. and I noticed they carry fingerboard dye for ebony fingerboards and headstocks. Does anyone use it? Does it improve the look? Does it affect the filler used around inlay, or even the inlay itself? Any comments would be appreciated.

I have seen this dye used on violin fingerboards, that where not made of ebony. It didn't work to well on the violins, leaves your fingertips black, and there is build up with dirt too! I can't see using it!

I believe it is commonly used on ebony as ebony coloring can vary so much. I had to make a new bridge for an old Gibson guitar once and I liked the streaking in the ebony blank so I left it natural.

Jeff H,
Good advise! I have been using the black as well as brown dye from a shoe store. I was able to get a nice sunburst on a repair/restore project with brown leather dye.
