First I have to thank Terry of Crystal Forest Mandolins on taking this project on as it's out of the norm.

Here are the specs on the build:

California Redwood top

Maple back, sides and neck

Ebony fingerboard and headstock cap

White binding

Round hole

Finish will be black top, brown stained back sides and neck.

Waverly Tuner machines

Gold hardware

Scale length: 13 7/8"

Body depth: 1 3/4"

Nut width: 1 3/8"

Terry has started staining. I like his idea for an almost completely black top, but you will be able to see the wood grain in the light.

Gold tailpiece, brown tuner buttons. . .looking good! Are the sides white or just very light at this point?

They are not stained yet. Terry will be working his magic on them next.

I like his idea, too. That's exactly what I meant by a dark stain, almost black, but translucent, not opaque. It reminds me of the work of Dr. Dave Cohen: http://www.bfstrings.com/#/inventory/359

Agreed! I'm glad Terry went that route.. it's going to look great!

Terry is finished with the staining and is no starting the lacquer.

I'm curious why you chose to have 5 singles rather than 5 courses?

That is a good question. I wanted to get more of a jazz guitar tone.

Congrats Joey! Looks fantastic, I've been following the progress pics with interest (love seeing things built) and I have found myself liking black top mandolins more and more.

This one has a transparent black top. I love black tops!
