View Full Version : Differences between Ceramic vs. Alnico magnets

I have a couple of technical questions regarding pick-ups for solid-body axes:

1) What makes one pickup sound better than another?

2) I've seen single-coil pickups advertised with both ceramic and alnico magnets, and the alnico pickups seem to cost more; what are the technical and performance differences them? Are there other types of magnets that make for a better pickup than these?

3) Are there any good reference web sites out there that I can visit for more info?

Thank you,
Jim

Steve Ryder also makes hand-wound pickups, some especially for mandolin.
