I was wondering if the type of finish on a mandolin has any bearing on the tone.

D'oh ! consensus is, apparently, both,+ all of the above, type and quantity applied ,and how long ago it was applied and the skill/techniques of the builder too...
look in abundant archives of thread pages at the bottom ,menu select: 'from the beginning'.
